Bottled Water for Healthy Living

Drinking water is important for healthy hydration and plays a vital role in people’s lives. Consumers choose bottled water for several reasons, including taste, quality, and convenience. Bottled water is also an alternative to other packaged beverages when consumers want to eliminate or moderate calories, caffeine, sugar, artificial flavors or colors, alcohol, and other ingredients from their diets. According to the Institute of Medicine and the American Journal of Preventative Medicine, two-thirds of American adults are overweight with one-third of those individuals being obese. In addition, over the last 30 years, children’s obesity rates have climbed from 5 percent to 17 percent.

Drinking zero-calorie beverages, such as water, instead of sugary drinks is regularly cited as a key component of a more healthful lifestyle. The consumption of water is a good thing.

Importance of Drinking Water While Exercising

There is nothing your body needs more than an adequate supply of water. When you exercise, it is even more important to drink the right about of water before, during, and after your workouts. Dehydration can play a role in not making the most out of your workout, it can also be very dangerous in extreme situations if you are dehydrated. Your performance may decline with only a minimal amount of dehydration. If you start out dehydrated, you most likely won’t get a good workout as you normally do. You could get dizzy, lethargic, lose strength in your muscles and develop more muscle cramping.

Water lubricates your body and helps your body to exercise efficiently. Think of the Tin Man without is oil. Your body needs water replenished during exercise in order for your tissues to heal and muscles to recover to its fullest capabilities.

How to stay hydrated?

For most people this is very good news and not complicated at all to stay hydrated. So how much water should you drink before, during and after a workout? If you typically have exercise sessions around 60 minutes or less, and if it doesn’t involve vigorous activity outdoors in hot, humid weather, here are some recommendations.
• First make sure you are hydrated to begin with
• Drink fluids throughout the day before you exercise
• One to two hours before your workout, drink 15 to 20 ounces of water
• 15 minutes before you begin, drink between 8 and 10 ounces of water
• During your workout, drink another 8 ounces every 15 minutes

You may need to drink more depending on how vigorous your workout and how heavily you are sweating, especially outdoors in very hot/humid weather. Stay healthy and stay hydrated!
